WebI think it's the same in most 3D software. Most of the time you'll want to be in face mode. Edge mode sometimes, depending on what you're doing. I've used extrude in vert mode before but very rarely. It tends to make weird geometry and isn't usually what you're looking for when you go to extrude something.
